Metcal was founded in 1982 as an R&D start-up in Silicon Valley, when a team of scientists developed a technology now called "SmartHeat". This technology is used in such diverse applications as pipe joining, griddles, and electrical interconnect systems.
In 1990 and 1991, through careful management and focus on exceptional engineering, Metcal was named one of Inc. Magazine's 500 fastest growing private companies. Today, Metcal holds over 75 patents, and is the world's leading manufacturer of soldering and conduction rework systems.
Metcal is also committed to customer service and technical support. In 1995, Metcal began to sponsor the Rework and Repair Exchange, a free, non-partisan, internet-based support network for electronics manufacturing professionals.
Metcal's merger in 1996 with OK Industries has enhanced Metcal's ability to provide products and services that enhance the productivity of electronics manufacturing worldwide. As part of OK International, Metcal now has a sales and support network unequalled in the industry.
